Sense Making & Strategy Creation

We help you to make sense of your organisation and the complexity of its unique context. Leadership Skills Lab

At Phronesis, we love a good leadership concept, model or theory. We also reckon the world doesn’t need any more leadership concepts, models or theories – we have enough. What we need is to bridge the gap between knowing and doing. What this means is that we need to build the adaptive leadership skills that will help us navigate VUCA conditions (conditions that are Volatile, Uncertain, Complex & Ambiguous). A skill by definition is something that we practice and that’s why we’ve developed our Leadership Skills Lab where leaders can experiment safely, build micro-skills swiftly, scaffold skills across the brain’s network and sharpen capacity for effective decision-making through real-world reasoning skills.

Creating a Thinking Environment

Now more than ever we need to foster environments where people are enabled to think independently and creatively in order to navigate the complexity of the world we find ourselves in. The complexity demands of senior leadership roles in most organisations often exceed the complexity of any one person’s thinking, making it even more critical that we create the conditions that allow the best thinking of individuals to come to the fore, and in doing so, optimise the collective intelligence of the group/team/organisation. A Thinking Environment (Nancy Kline) is a system of components that (a) allow divergent perspectives to be heard, (b) bring forth emergent perspectives, and (c) give rise to convergent perspectives, harnessing collective intelligence for optimum decision-making.

I engaged Phronesis to design and facilitate a 12 month leadership development program for our emerging, mid-level and senior managers. The brief was for a modular approach that would address the differing leadership development needs of these three groups and provide a framework for ongoing development as individuals progressed in their career. Importantly, the program needed to demonstrate understanding of our industry context and alignment with our business strategy.

Having worked with a number of leadership development experts over the years, the Phronesis team is a standout for their ability to quickly get to the heart of the specific industry, business and leadership challenges of the client and design a customised program that directly addresses the organisation's needs. During our year long engagement, I also observed their ability to deal with complexity and change, thinking on their feet to tailor the workshops in real time, resulting in a high degree of participant engagement and tangible leadership skills progression from session to session.
